Twin Cities local artist Amy Sands creates one-of-a-kind paper works that integrate traditional and digital methods of printmaking. Through the support of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, Amy’s latest body of work draws on ASI’s textile collection to inspire new patterns that are translated into paper cuts and then printed.
Amy has long explored the concept of craft and women’s work in her art. Imagery sourced from textiles, lace and craft doilies emerge in her paper abstractions – paying homage to the history of women’s role in craft and the cultural value of the two.

Twin Cities local artist Amy Sands creates one-of-a-kind paper works that integrate traditional and digital methods of printmaking. Through the support of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, Amy’s latest body of work draws on ASI’s textile collection to inspire new patterns that are translated into paper cuts and then printed.
Amy has long explored the concept of craft and women’s work in her art. Imagery sourced from textiles, lace and craft doilies emerge in her paper abstractions – paying homage to the history of women’s role in craft and the cultural value of the two.
Amy’s work also pushes the boundaries of what has been historically defined as a print. She uses post-digital printmaking processes, such as laser engraving and paper cuts, and sometimes incorporates unconventional materials like acrylic. This has allowed her to expand on ways of thinking about paper and print; it is a balance of the delicate and the mechanical.
For this series of work featured in Lace Reimagined, Amy explored patterns and imagery from an old sample book from the ASI Collection titled Knyppel Profver (Lace Tests) which highlights Swedish bobbin lace. Explore more of the ASI Collection here.
Amy’s work will be displayed in the Link, connecting the Nelson Culture Center and the Turnblad Mansion, as well as life-size pieces outside on ASI’s historic fence along Park Avenue.
Artist Bio
Amy Sands (MFA, Pratt Institute) is a Minneapolis based artist focusing on one-of-a-kind works on paper that integrate traditional and digital methods of printmaking.
She has exhibited in solo and group shows across the world including, Prints Tokyo 2012, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and the International Printmaking Biennial of Douro, Portugal.
Her work has been internationally recognized with numerous awards and is in both private and permanent collections, from the Faro Cabo Mayor Art Center Santander, Spain to the New York Public Library in New York City.
Amy is a recipient of the 2020 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. In addition to this solo exhibition at ASI, she will be exhibiting at the Osterøy Museum in Lonevåg, Norway in 2022. Amy is also Assistant Professor of Studio Arts at Metropolitan State University and is represented at Muriel Guépin Gallery in New York City.
