In the Next Room, or the vibrator play

BY SARAH RUHL
DIRECTED BY AUSTENE VAN
FEBRUARY 4 – MARCH 6, 2022

In The Next Room is a laugh-out-loud, dramatic comedy with a fresh take on the history and politics of relationships, science and electricity. Dr. Givings has innocently invented an extraordinary new device for treating “hysteria” in women. While tending to her newborn, the young, energetic Mrs. Givings is overwhelmed by curiosity, fantasizing about what could be happening within the walls of the good doctor’s laboratory in the next room. Inside of the pristine, seemingly perfect Victorian home, Dr. and Mrs. Givings examine the nature of their marriage, and what it means to honestly love. To further complicate matters, a new “hysterical” patient and her husband bring a wet nurse and their own complex relationship into the doctor’s home. True love as never been so electrifying!

“Insightful, fresh and funny, the play is as rich in thought as it is in feeling…one of the most gifted American playwrights to emerge in recent years…In the Next Room is a true novelty…for adults with open hearts and minds.” – The New York Times

Passing Strange is a bold, cutting edge rock musical which transports us across the dividing lines of place, identity and conventional theater. A young Bohemian pilots us from black middle-class America to Amsterdam and Berlin on a quest to discover his personal and artistic authenticity. His intense, humorous, and soulful story moves us beyond the limits of sex, drugs and rock & roll and into “the real.”
